A collection of three Toba Batak ceremonial poles (locals call them Tunggal Panaluan), each amazingly carved from single pieces of wood by the Toba Batak in Sumatra for their rituals in connection with headhuntings, farmings and initiation for young men in the past.

Description

MAGIC STAFF / Tunggal Panaluan of Batak people for good harvest, Sumatra Indonesia.  Circa 1970 collection, beautiful and well kept. There is a chipped area(shown in one of my photo), sold as shown.

Height: 50 – 52 cm / 19.7 – 20.5 inches

Diameter: 3.5 cm / 1.4 inch average

Weight: 1 kg / 2.2 lb

After packing: 2 kg / 4.4 lb

During Tunggal Panaluan ceremonies especially the save, men who participated in the rituals had to eat plain rice on banana leaves for 5 consecutive days and abstain from any contact with women or indulge in any act that would provoke the deities protecting them. By observing such taboo the men would strengthen their souls and make brave in battles as well as to ask the deities for good harvests and for protection of the from evil spirits.
