In Iban childbirth after delivery, the umbilical cord are quickly stored away in a jar and taken immediately across river and buried in a special plot known as ‘the cemetery of the afterbirth’. Infancy in the Iban communities, firstly, ‘tasting salt’; secondly, ‘introducing the day’ and ‘naming’ infants and thirdly, ‘bathing’. These three rituals signal the end of the mother’s confinement and marks the final ritual reintegration of her and her infant into the longhouse community. The ritualistic baby bathtub was used only once during the final ritual in the 1st month.
