Rare piece, headhunter Borneo Dayak mask, Lepo’ Ke’ Kenyah colored mask, a soul catching mask with it’s distinctive red. Circa 1950-60. Original paint and condition, no repair. Dayak, tribes of Borneo. Stand included.

Masks in this region in Borneo are mainly used for harvest festival, fertility rites, soul catching and death ceremonies and spiritual dances.
Soul catching mask are always unearthly, harvest festival mask being colorful. Demon dance mask look sinister and demonic, their trademark features bearing facial expressions such as protruding eyes-jagged teeth-demonic fangs-tongue jutting out-wrinkled forehead..etc

COLORS are which provides the masks its identities, white as base color and black to emphasize the features, red is always used to denote a demonic character.
