A rare Toba medicine container featuring a mythical Naga Morsarang Batak Container, made in spectacular fashion from genuine deer horn and wood, with open-artwork of Leech & Creeper Plant. The lid’s handle made in the shape of a Hornbill Bird is also made of deer horn. Toba Batak, Indonesia. Circa 1970, excellent condition.

Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups found in the highlands of North Sumatra Indonesia.
Toba Batak are known traditionally for their weaving, wood carving and especially ornate stone tombs. Their burial and marriage traditions are very rich and complex. The burial tradition includes a ceremony in which the bones of ones ancestors are re interred several years after death.
