Old spectacular Korwar  Figurine, Oceanic Art from Cenderawasih Indonesia. Standing 610mm tall, weighting 5.2 kg / 11.4 lb.  The crown is chipped at it’s center,  some natural crack lines from aging which makes it beautiful, these are some of the last remaining old statue of the Korwar Cenderewasih island. Circa 1960.

Description

Cenderawasih Figure / Oceanic Art Effigy, the Korwar served as supernatural intermediaries allowing the living to communicate with the dead. When a family member died, his or her relatives summoned a carver, typically a religious specialist, who created Korwar and enticed the spirit of the deceased to enter it. Hence, depicting the ancestor in a seated or standing position with the robust head and arrow-shaped nose that are the hallmarks of Cenderawasih figure carvings.
