With 26 skulls locally known as Buah Sempuyong / Skull Basket decorated amongst Petara, Omen Bird and Mata Antu / Spirit’s Eye, this Pua Kumbu blanket, an Iban weaving, is definitely a War Textile during WWII with four of the most powerful headhunting rituals. It is likely a summary of 26 beheaded skulls from a single Dayak longhouse.

Pua kumbu of Borneo:
The Pua weaving or the Pua Kumbu is a ritual blanket used for religious ceremonies, festivals Gawai, ceremonies associated with birth, death, healing or soul-searching and war of headhunting. It serves as a means of communication between this world and the world of ancestors, spirits and gods. All the dyes used in the traditional Pua Kumbu are vegetable and fruit(mango stein-reddish color) origin.

Condition: Some discoloration and tear, the largest tear measures 5 x 3 cm / 2 x 1.2 inch but otherwise this an exceedingly powerful and rare tribal fabric of the Iban tribe, and very beautiful too.
