Amazing artifact from Borneo, the Ketam Kayu / Planing Tool carved in elaborated fashion from ONE single piece of Ironwood(hardest wood in the world) featuring an Aso Dog Guardian. Circa 1965, excellent original condition, damage free and with no blade fitted it was likely never used for planing.

Planing Tool / Vintage Planing tool, decorated with tribal art. Dayak Iban collection, Borneo.

Aso creature: Patung Dayak Statue , a mythical Aso Dog(confer protection upon those who possessed this image during war).

Planing is a manufacturing process of material removal in which the workpiece reciprocates against a stationary cutting tool producing a plane or sculpted surface. Planing is analogous to shaping. The main difference between these two processes is that in shaping the tool reciprocates across the stationary workpiece. Planing motion is the opposite of shaping.
