During earlier times the Sumbanese practiced elongation of the earlobes. Mamuli were worn as ear ornaments. However, today they are hung around the neck as old silver pendant or attached to garments. Therefore, the overall forms of mamuli represent female genitalia. However, each is considered either male or female depending on its secondary characteristics. Male mamuli usually has flaring bases.
Mamuli is embellished with figures of humans, animals, or other subjects. It is a sacred treasure object and not a simple ornament or marriage exchange gift. Thus, during social functional level, Mamuli are lavish prestige objects similar to old pendant and earring.
