Description
Korwar Figurine / Oceanic sculpture. Circa 1965. Korwar images served as supernatural intermediaries, allowing the living to communicate with the dead. When a family member dies, his or her relatives summoned a carver that is typically a religious specialist to create a Korwar and enticed the spirit of the deceased to enter it. The robust head and arrow-shaped nose are the hallmarks of Cenderawasih in carving any Korwar figurine.
