Batak Chamber / Tribal container. Featuring at each crown a regal Batak figurine riding atop a singa to take away illnesses. North Sumatra, Indonesia. The Guri Guri Batak chamber, porcelain body has a missing ear and some hairline but otherwise both containers are in good condition. Guri chamber, circa 1930 whereas the wooden container circa 1960 piece.
Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups found in the highlands of North Sumatra Indonesia. Toba Batak are known traditionally for their weaving, wood carving and especially ornate stone tombs. Their burial and marriage traditions are very rich and complex.
